Fetter McDermott in the News
Students Allowed to Walk in Jersey Shore Graduation Ceremony — June 4, 2011

Joel McDermott, attorney for the students
Less than 24 hours before the event, Superintendent Richard Emery announced that all graduating seniors would be allowed to walk in the Jersey Shore Area High School's June 4 commencement ceremony. The school board had previously banned sixteen Jersey Shore seniors from the ceremony as punishment for allegedly participating in underage drinking. The announcement came after Judge Dudley Anderson ruled that eight of the students must be allowed to walk in the ceremony, leaving the fate of the remaining eight seniors to the school board.
Attorney Joel McDermott, one of the attorneys representing the students named in the court order, was pleased with the news. “We want to establish a precedent that says clearly that this sort of response to a situation where students are suspected of misbehavior in a way completely unrelated to the school cannot be a basis for students being barred from school-sponsored events.”
